Pneumothorax

General:

 

You must provide your medical examiner with the following information:

  • Date onset of Pneumothorax.
  • Name and location of treating health care professional.
  • What interventions have been done.
  • Medications you are taking.
  • Treatment plan.
  • Side effects of medication. 
  • Verify if using of Oxygen.
  • Report: Any history of chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of ankles, dizziness or fatigue.

Document number of past pneumothorax episodes.  Document which side.  Spontaneous or traumatic?   Any symptoms? If so are symptoms at rest or with exertion.  Verify lack of oxygen use.

 

Waiting period:  None but complete recovery must be documented by x-ray. Examiner may obtain records from treating provider if needed.  Examiner is not required to perform a Chest x-ray as part of the exam.

 

Certification:

Driver who is stable and asymptomatic: Certify up to two years

 

Do Not Certify: 

Driver with:  Hypoxemia at rest, incomplete recovery, symptomatic, cough syncope, oxygen use, or severely abnormal lung function documented by testing as above.

 

Special Circumstance:  Drivers who have sustained a pneumothorax two or more times on the SAME side without pleurodesis are  disqualified until procedure is performed and the driver has recovered.
